Poit from Hills

Since our childhood, we have known only one source for the best lentils and food ingredients; our grandparents. Living in the hills of Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand, our Nana-Nani were farmers. On our way back from our trip to the village, they would stock up our bags with small potlies (bags) containing lentils, rice, spices, ghee and whatever was carefully cultivated and stored in their Kothar (Pahadi pantry) over the years.

Poit, (pronounced with a dental t, ) is a Jaunsari word for dal or broth. For us like many people from the Jaunsar Bawar region of Uttarakhand, Poit is a mix of emotions and memories. Memories not just of delicious flavours and textures but also of the beauty and culture of our motherland. Emotions; not just of happiness and beauty, but also of health and well-being.

Today, the villages of Jaunsar-Bawar are becoming a ghost of its past, and monoculture has left its mark on agrarian practices, soil, and the environment. Poit from Hills strives to revive our villages, its farmers, culture, cuisine, stories, and environment. Our commitment lies with the farmers of Uttarakhand, sourcing in small batches from the micro-farmers of Jaunsar-Bawar, Garhwal and Kumaon Hills, not just to ensure fair prices for them but also contribute to the well-being of farmers, consumers, and the planet.

Selected with care, and nurtured by Nature, we bring you the best the hills of Uttarakhand have to offer.

Welcome to Poit from the Hills!
